The Noblesville Millers finished the 2019 boys golf season as the state runner-up in the IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
Noblesville entered the day sitting in third place with a team score of 305, two strokes behind Center Grove. The Millers shot a second round score of 300 to secure a tie with Center Grove for second place with a total team score of 605.
Clay Merchent led the Millers, shooting four under in the second round to finish in a first place tie for individual honors. Merchent ultimately finished as the state’s individual runner-up, falling short in a one-hole playoff to Carmel’s Nick Dentino. Merchent trailed Dentino by two strokes entering the 17th hole, where Dentino bogeyed and Merchent saved par. After narrowly missing an Eagle by inches on the 18th hole, Merchent birdied to force a playoff.
This is the highest finish for Noblesville since the Millers finished as the state runner-up in 2005, and it marks the program’s fifth runner-up finish at the IHSAA State Finals; the Millers won back-to-back state championships in 1998 and 1999. Clay Merchent is the second Miller to finish as the individual state runner-up in program history; Bryan Kohlmeier finished as the individual state runner-up in 1998.
Merchent and Jacob Deakyne each earned IHSGCA All-State honors, marking the twentieth and twenty-first times in program history that a Miller golfer has earned the distinction. With the honor, Merchent becomes the first four-time member of the IHSGCA All-State team in the Miller Boys’ Golf program’s history.
